How Delight in God Makes Me Free

I wonder how much of our weariness comes from the quiet suspicion that we’re always being graded. We measure what we accomplish, how faithfully we pray, what we eat, how much we exercise. We want to be healthy and faithful and disciplined. Those are good desires. Yet somewhere along the way, we can become our own demanding audience.

I know that longing. I want to approve of the woman looking back at me in the mirror. I want to reach the end of the day satisfied that I exercised enough, prayed enough, accomplished enough, resisted enough—and perhaps, finally, I am enough.

Except enough is remarkably difficult to reach.

This is why delight in God has become so precious to me. Because at the center of it stands Jesus. Jesus frees us from the exhausting project of proving ourselves because he has already done what we could never do. His perfect life becomes ours. His righteousness covers us. His cross settles the question we keep trying to answer through our performance: Am I acceptable?

In Christ, God’s answer is already yes. And suddenly, “Taste and see that the LORD is good!” (Psalm 34:8) feels like an invitation we can actually receive. We can stop measuring long enough to taste. We can enjoy a beautiful meal without negotiating every bite. Move our bodies because they’re astonishing gifts. Open Scripture because we want more of Jesus. Sit quietly with him with nothing left to prove.

This longing runs through Awaken Delight*. Because I suspect many of us aren’t ultimately hungry for better habits or greater discipline. Beneath all that striving, we’re hungry for Jesus.

And perhaps freedom begins there: when we stop asking ourselves to provide what Christ has already given us. We look away from ourselves and toward him. And there he is. Beautiful. Sufficient. Ours.

That’s the taste of delight in God, rooted in His delight of us in Christ.
